Before Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) became a legal requirement, Persimmon Homes South Coast needed 15 units of grassland and scrub habitat to unlock their Swanmore development. With tight deadlines and specific council requirements to meet, they turned to the BNG Partnership.
As fourth-generation landowners ourselves, we understand the land as well as the legislation. We used our in-depth expertise to bridge the gap between the developer’s planning needs and the landowner’s long-term goals.

We worked closely with landowners Oliver and Emilie Dallyn at Polhampton Farm to create a four-hectare habitat scheme tailored to Persimmon's requirements. Our team provided full ecological expertise and covered most of the upfront costs to get the project off the ground.
This project goes beyond simple compliance. We designed a diverse mosaic of native grassland and scrub, carefully selected to support local biodiversity. By planting native hedgerows and wildflower-rich grassland, we have created an ideal home for species such as:
· Yellowhammers: These birds thrive in the new scrub edges, using the dense cover for nesting and the tops of the plants as favourite spots to sing.
· Common Blue Butterflies: The native flowers provide essential nectar sources for these pollinators.
· Hedgehogs: The mix of grassland and scrub provide perfect foraging grounds and nesting sites for hedgehogs, which are currently in decline.
This habitat is designed to mature and thrive, ensuring the land provides tangible environmental value for the next 30 years.

"The partnership provided a secure, long-term source of income while letting us stay involved in managing the land. It’s rewarding to know the site will now contribute to local biodiversity for decades to come."
Oliver Dallyn, Polhampton Farm
This project was just as important for the developer, giving them the certainty they needed to get things moving. Gregg shared how our partnership helped clear the way:
"This was one of the first projects of its kind we’d gone through in the Winchester area, and BNG Partnership made the process straightforward from start to finish. Their support allowed us to meet planning obligations efficiently and proceed with home sales on schedule."
Gregg Allison, Persimmon Homes South Coast
This project was a win for everyone. Persimmon Homes met their obligations and kept home sales moving, while Oliver and Emilie transformed part of their farm into a reliable, sustainable financial asset.
This success proves that with the right expertise, BNG can support traditional farming families while delivering essential environmental recovery.
